Sylina is a member of the Arachessen, a group of elite women warriors who use the Threads of the world to see by.  They’re blinded when they enter the Sisterhood; sacrificing their eyes so the goddess Acaeja will gift them something more than sight – a way of seeing the world much more clearly and knowing how to use the threads to ensure they never miss a single thing.  When the Blood Born Vampires invade her home of Glaea and her partner is killed on a mission, Sylina knows that she wants nothing more than to kill the conqueror. When the Sightmother (the leader of the Arachessen) gifts her an undercover mission of being the Vampire’s Seer, she gleefully accepts, knowing that she will be able to get close enough to end him.  But integrating herself with the Vampire will take every ounce of cunning, magic and charisma Sylina has.  It will also mean she has to accept some very uncomfortable home truths about her homeland, the Sisterhood and her past.  Can Sylina overcome her adversity to the Vampire enough that she can get close to him?  And if she does, will she be able to go through with her ultimate mission; to end the Conqueror in his tracks?Â
I came across Slaying the Vampire Conqueror and Broadbent from the Mortal Enemies to Monster Lovers series, of which Slaying the Shadow Prince by Helen Scheuerer is included in.  And, I feel as though I’ve discovered a new author to fall in love with.  Vampire Conqueror, just like Shadow Prince is an extension of a world Broadbent has already created, and it seems as though I need to have a good read of this world to fully appreciate it.  Although, I’m certainly not complaining.  Her writing is sharp and slightly ferocious as she allows Sylina’s anger and fear to drive the narrative.  There’s a beauty in the hard lines of the text, though; although Sylina can’t see, she notices everything.  From the complexities of Atrius’ emotions to the compassion that soaks his soul. Â
This is a book that’s full of battles, murder, betrayal and fear. But, it’s also got so much love in it. The love Sylina has for her Sisters in the Arachessen and the Sightmother, the love she has for her homeland and its people, the love she still holds for her brother – even though she was supposed to have forgotten her life before the Sisterhood and the blossoming love she feels for the Vampire she’s been ordered to kill. She pulls at your heartstrings as her story unfolds; pulling you into her blindfolded life that’s still filled with so much colour it’s overwhelming.
