Set around six months after the fall of Naavra, Talemir Starling and Wilder Hawthorne are sent back to the doomed islands to investigate reports of someone or something tampering with the source of the magical Naarvian Steel that all Warsword blades are made of. Their intent is to find the wayward son of the Forge Master and to kill him to stop the degradation of the blades. But are stopped in their tracks when they realise that they are hunting the very ranger they’ve just fought off a bunch of wraiths with – the fierce and beautiful Drue Emerson.
Drue has only one mission in life; to end all the Shadow Wraiths that have laid her home and family to ruin. With being the daughter of the Forge Master, she knows how to treat ordinary steel so that it can detect a wraith – and when the cuff she wears daily burns in Talemir Starling’s company, she knows immediately what he is. She agrees to show the Warswords the mines where the steel is sourced, but also swears to have Starling’s heart in her hands before he leaves her land.
It’s only when her young charge is abducted by the wraiths that Drue realises she needs the Warswords of Thezmarr to rescue them. As she travels with Starling, she realises that the man is more than his legend and much more than the shadows that taint him.
Part of the Mortal Enemies to Monster Lovers series by five exciting romantic fantasy authors, Slaying the Shadow Prince is Helen Scheuerer’s contribution to the series. But, fear not, Scheuerer fans. Slaying the Shadow Prince is set within the universe of her other novels, and although is a standalone novel, is also very much part of her Legends of Thezmarr series – with familiar characters popping up here and there. Indeed, if you’ve read Blood and Steel, Slaying the Shadow Prince not only answers some of the burning questions in the first official Thezmarr series, it also throws up some burning questions too. In true Scheuerer fashion, there are tantalising glimpses into the other realms of her ever growing universe and cleaver hints and loopbacks to characters in her other books.
Although, this is a step away from Scheuerer’s usual style; at its heart, it’s not just a story about good verses evil – there’s an incredibly steamy romance in there too. Drue and Talemir explore their deepening bond with their entire bodies and souls and the writing is dedicated in its detail. Every sex scene is enough to make the readers’ toes curl and breathe hitch – with Scheuerer not skimming over any part of Talemir’s anatomy.
So, if you’re a fan of Scheuerer’s work, and enjoy a wee bit of erotica, then this is the book for you.
