⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Enchanting Escapism to a Magical World
I bought the book to read as a family with my children but I found myself looking forward to the next chapter just as much as they did! I’d say it’s perfect for adults, young adults and older children who have an interest in the magical.
So excited to discover this author and we can’t wait for her next book. It’s a good job that there is apparently a sequel on the way, as there is no way that I’m ready to let go of these characters and their wonderful world yet!A fantastic book and I’m really looking forward to reading more from this author. I can tell a lot of time and effort has been put into this book and this author will just get better and better!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Magical Read!
While reading The Witch Laws, I couldn’t help but think that any author happening across her novel would end up jealous of Sally’s prose, and that in itself says volumes about her writing. It reminds me of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy. As does the love one gathers for Seren and her family, just as readers gained love for Lyra in Pullman’s epic novels.
Sally has created a character in Seren who is the older sister we all wished we had while growing up—caring, diligent, loving beyond means, and mature beyond her years. She has to be, as the leader of an orphaned family of three younger brothers and an adorable little sister named Luna, who in herself could be the main character of a novel, and who knows, perhaps one day will.
We see that Seren has enough on her hands, but on her eighteenth birthday she discovers she has the powers of a Higher—once a group of magical beings, now thought to have long disappeared. As she tries to keep her family safe and her power hidden, some learn of it and soon there are those seeking to take it from her; something that can only happen through death.
The Witch Laws is full of colorful writing, tremendous characters with strong character arcs, vivid world building, and an intertwined, developing plot line. This is a story of Highers, Witches and Darkness. Altass puts down a rich history where there are those who will kill to get the power of a Higher. And Seren stands directly in the sights of all who want the greatest Power to come along in eons—hers.
This is a definite read, but comes with a warning. When that last page is read, you will be left aching for more.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✩
I really enjoyed this debut indie read. Everyone loves found family, but it’s not often wholesome sibling relationships feature so heavily in a fantasy read like this. Seren was a bit passive for my taste at times, but she was unwaveringly loyal to her family and I liked that a lot about her. Rheagan (possible love interest?) is an interesting character that I’m keen to learn more about, I sense a lot more depth there. There are a lot of different characters and personalities, and they’re all unique, individual and engaging.
I went in basically blind on the magic system and world in this book and I enjoyed the way it unfolded.
This story definitely feels like it has only just begun and I’m really keen to read more and see it develop. I enjoyed the time spent with the characters and eagerly await the next installment!

When Seren turns eighteen, her life changes dramatically, because it turns out she has Power. She is a Higher, someone with magic in her veins. Because of her newfound abilities, Seren is escorted to the capital and the Leader, Ardenna. Her family is broken up, which is not an easy thing when all of the siblings are much younger than her. And a growing, disturbing evil is stirring once more; it may be only Seren’s power that can save everyone.
The Witch Laws was an amazing, thrilling fantasy read and I am so grateful I received an e-ARC of it! It has a cast of characters whom readers will immediately love, against a backdrop of danger that is truly creepy and chilling.
Sally has burst onto the indie author scene with a powerful, epic YA fantasy and I cannot praise her highly enough for this debut novel. It was everything I could wish for!
