After Caleb killed his Master, and the Obsidian settled it’s shadowy claws into him, Maddy was completely and utterly bereft. He’d turned her best friend, Cora, into a vampire, and while Maddy knows he did so to ultimately save her life, she doesn’t know if she can entirely forgive him, either.
Meanwhile, Caleb has fled – the Obsidian’s insidious nature is worming it’s way into his very soul. He can’t be near Maddy, for fear of succumbing to it’s dark promises and hurting the girl he’s beginning to fall for. But Maddy is nothing short of determined. She’s desperate to help get the Obsidian’s influence away from Caleb, and she’ll follow him to the end of the earth if she has to. Or rather, to Mercy City, and the headquarters of Merrick Industries, where the head of the company is gathering dark forces towards him…
So, I love the Keeperverse, Tamar Sloan’s collection of New Adult novels that interconnect with each other. There’s a wealth of amazing, strong, supernatural characters – some larger than life, others not so much. Vampire Unveiled is the second in The Keepers of the Chalice series – and in it, we get to know Maddy and Caleb a little better, with a few cameo’s from Gabby and Colt – who are central to the entire Universe of Keepers.
That. Being said, although I enjoyed Vampire Unveiled, I didn’t think it was quite as strong as the preceding books. It felt rushed in places, especially with any bombshells that were dropped. A little more build up to the explosive moments would have felt more organic, rather than them happening suddenly as if from out of thin air.
That said, I have to say, I loved the slimy, oily character of Malcolm and the strange character of Ileana/Quinn. A good bad guy is so hard to come across sometimes, and here, we have two.
