Amika used to be a princess; used to luxury. Now she hunts demonspawn, using the strange itching beneath her skin to help her kill the evil beings that prowl the realm. Until she’s almost killed on a hunt gone wrong, and rescued by the strange Kriah who lives in a forest with his ancient grandfather. He’s not surprised by Amika’s unexpected arrival; indeed he knows exactly who she is; who she used to be. And informs her that along with Kriah, she’s a Chosen. A harbinger of a prophecy almost as old as their world itself. When a childhood friend stumbles across the forest dwelling, he is also swept along in the old mans determination to free a Goddess from a tear in the sky. But Amika and her friend Rei have different paths they must take, namely freeing Amika’s brother, the crown prince Kio from the dungeons of Prince Reminas of Barran; the ruler of the country that has been raiding Amika’s lands for generations. Which path should Amika and Rei take? And will freeing the goddess really return their world to a paradise?
The Ruptured Sky is the first book in McMinn’s The Gardens of War and Wasteland series, which is set to be a quartet. it’s also her debut novel. And she has created a richly detailed universe with a cast of characters who are engaging, brave and infuriating. It’s a tapestry that makes a warm blanket as you sink into a world where magic, terrifying creatures and malice rules along side people who would give their very life to keep you, the uninitiated reader, safe. The names of the lead characters, Amikharlia, Kiokharen, Greist’hal, Rei-Hai, Kriah are a bit of a mouthful. But they are more often than not referred to as their shortened names; Amika, Kio, Grey, Rei, letting the reader feel as though they know them intimately as friends.
This is a book filled with action, almost from the very beginning. Nothing is obvious; nothing seems to go smoothly for our leads. They’re met with obstacles at every corner, every turning – making this relatively long read fast paced and breath taking. It doesn’t feel as though you’re reading almost 100 thousand words. Indeed, it’s compelling reading, almost unputdownable. When the end came, I was disappointed, wanting to devour more words and to discover what was going to happen next. Yes, I know I have to wait for the next book, but at the moment I finished The Ruptured Sky I didn’t want it to end.
