When I stumbled across the first book in Helen Scheuererâs debut series âHeart of Mistâ (published in August 2017), I was instantly pulled in â from the very first sentence of the Prologue. This was a story which was going to be gripping, I just knew it.
By the time Iâd finished HoM, I was hooked and immediately signed up to Helenâs newsletter. I diarised the publication date of the second book in the series, and waited with bated breath for itâs release. I admittedly didnât have to wait too long, as âReign of Mistâ was released in September 2018 â and as usual, Iâd been a bit late to the party with reading the debut novel. As soon as the date arrived, I downloaded the book and devoured it within two days. I wasnât disappointed.
It’s fair to say that I was already fan girling somewhat over the Australian author. She had crafted such an amazing world filled with colourful and incredible characters. I found I could fall into the screen of my Kindle and gaze upon the scenes sheâd written as though I was there. I could feel the prickly mist on my skin. Taste the tang of sea salt on my tongue. Smell the musky scent of horses. Hear the rustle of wind in the forest. My heart broke when Bleakâs did. My breath coming in wheezes as I raced to keep up with Dash racing through the palace. My ribs hurt from every bruise that Henri gained. I was with these people, body and soul.
In July, 2019, âWar of Mistâ was released, and the story began to hurtle towards the end. I read with tears flowing down my cheeks as tragedy struck. Iâm not ashamed to say I mourned when characters didnât make it. And I mourned the end of a gripping series.
Luckily, Scheuerer would send links in her news letters for her avid readers to peruse short stories about her stunning characters, from before the events of HoM. Eventually, she released them in a compilation collection, entitled âDawn of Mistâ, and of course, I downloaded it. And bought the entire box set collection when it was released in September 2020, one huge tome of over 1,000 pages â âThe Oremere Chronicles Omnibus â The Complete Seriesâ, which even came complete with maps.
I found myself flicking back to TOCO when Scheuerer released the second book in âThe Curse of the Cyren Queenâ series â and grinning from ear to ear when I spotted clear links between the two series. I actually said to my long suffering husband âoh, sheâs clever. Sneaky, brilliant and clever.â He simply stared at me in a slightly bemused fashion and shrugged his shoulders, as used to me babbling excitedly about books heâs never as anyone can be.
It takes an author of astonishing talent to be able to grab me and haul me into their pages. Itâs a magic that so very few can wield with any competence. To suck a reader into their world and surround them with the sights, sounds, smells and feelings that their perfectly crafted characters experience is surely the aim of every single author? Scheuerer has not only managed this once, sheâs consistently hit the mark. With Oremere and with Curse. She became a best selling author not by chance â but by skill â and thatâs something which is not easy when you are an independent author.
