Things are beginning to heat up for Arielle and Reign as they continue their search for the Holy Grail, the Innocents and battle the demons intent on opening all of the Gates of Hell. The Sins are wreaking havoc on Mercy City, and it now resembles a war zone – as its citizens succumb to the Sins influences. Reign has to try to train the remaining Grail Keeper Potentials, while Arielle is determined to try and right the wrong from when she unleashed the Obsidian – which now is firmly wrenching the Witch, Dinah, into its insidious grasp. Meanwhile, Rachel and Marlow have worked out how to track down the remaining Innocents, and are hatching a plan on keeping them safe and sound within the protection of the Knights. But with more Demons pouring out of the tear, can they truly ever think they can win this supernatural war?
We’re nearing the end of the Keepers of the Grail series, now, and Sloan has masterfully pulled a lot of threads together – and not just from this series. We meet Orion officially, introduced in the Keepers of the Chalice: Vampire Undone, and we get to learn more of his backstory and why, exactly he’s in purgatory. She also, as she did with Keepers of the Light: Marked Angel gave us a more complex story of the origins of the demons – including Lucifer himself. We learn how the Obsidian was made, and also, exactly what it’s after. It’s a lot to take in, in one book – but it answers so many questions. Questions that have been mounting across the entire Keepersverse.
There are a few twists in Gates of Fury, and although I don’t want to give away any spoilers, so I’m going to be as careful as possible – but Ari and Reign’s relationship kicks up a notch as Reign begins to realise exactly how important Arielle is. He discovers his deeper connection to Cain, one that disturbs and frightens him. One of the twists, yeah, I did kind of see coming; Sloan had left clues dotted throughout the storyline before she released the bombshell. The other twist? It took my breath away with its cleverness.
With the finale in the Keepers of the Grail series not slated for release until September next year, I can only guess that this is going to be one explosive ending, with the repercussions echoing throughout the whole of the Keepersverse for many books to come.
