Fresh from their successful retrieval of Dragon Queen’s Savim Savid’s (or, simply, Mavis to the children), Roger and Mary must now return to the surface and protect the Egg from the nefarious plans of the Fire Worm King, Morgrave. But first, they must return to the surface of Erf, where magick doesn’t exist. With only the Queen’s magickal blue aura flame protecting them from the mind attacks from King Morgrave, they must face new dangers and fight off new enemies. But with the protection already waining, how long can they last before the Fire Worms attack them and try to take the Egg? Will they make new, powerful friends who will help them with their quest? Will they gain new powers, enabling them to fight the might of the Fire Worms? Will the unhatched Dragon Prince ever wake up? And will they ever reach the mysterious Dragon’s Nest safely?
Picking up more or less directly from when Dragon’s Egg left off, Dragon’s Inferno continues with Roger and Mary’s adventure that started when they simply ran away from a group of bullies. In Dragon’s Inferno, we get to delve further into the lore and law of Erf, a parallel universe to our own Earth, where Dragon’s rule the Under Erf and the Erf’s Core. Langley has developed Roger and Mary beautifully, with Roger’s confidence growing exponentially – he hardly seems to stutter as the book progresses, especially around Mary. Their relationship is also growing into something beautiful; becoming ever closer and into a formidable team – but fighting Fire Worms and risking their lives over an unhatched Dragon Egg containing the last True Dragon Prince will do that.
Langley has also allowed us more insight into the scheming Lord Morgrim, twin of the Fire Worm King Morgrave. Their connection is more entwined, and Morgrave’s madness and desire to decimate all True Dragon’s is becoming more obsessive and dangerous to everyone, not just the Fire Worms. Although, at times, Langley may use some outdated language when the Dragons and Worms are arguing and insulting each other, it’s still an entertaining read.
This is a book for any lovers of fantasy, magic, dragons and unlikely heroes (and heroines) with a strong, unbreakable friendship.
