A few years ago, I spent some time as a volunteer in one of my local High Schools as a Teaching Assistant in the English Department. I was aiming to become an English Teacher – as well – I love literature (obviously) and had always thought that teaching was in my future. While I got on well during my volunteering (with the students and the teachers), when I actually applied to a Teacher Training Course, I didn’t succeed, and my path branched into a completely different direction.
What’s that got to do with this book? I hear you ask. Well, if I’d have had access to this book my Michelle Prosser Haywood, I may well have actually got onto a course. It has invaluable information, tips and real terms advice for anyone who wants to get into teaching. From choosing an Initial Teacher Training course, to passing interviews and even career progression. Beginner Teachers in Ordinary Classrooms: Securing Your First Post is a one stop manual for any one thinking about taking up teaching a career. There are examples pointing out how best to fill out applications, what examples to use in interviews and how to write your cover letter. Haywood has also given hints and tips on where to look for teaching positions, as well as a breakdown of terminology, key stages and what OFSTEAD does.
As mentioned earlier, had I had this book a few years ago, it would have been my bible. My absolute go-to for when I attended the course interviews and what I could have spoken about. Instead, I was a nervous wreak, with all the information I wanted to give coming out disorganised and backwards.
